Sorry we've been quiet for a while, but you know that just means we're working hard, right?
After his massively successful tour of France last month, Ben Sharpa came down to Cape Town this week for some meetings. He also got in the studio for some major international collaborations.
These collabs have been a long time coming so we're really excited. With our very own super-producer, Hipe, on production you already know the tracks are banging!
The first collaboration is with Puerto Rican Hip Hop artist, Siete Nueve. On working with Sharpa he said, "It's real good to connect PR to the Motherland. I'm a protector of our Afro-Caribbean culture and it's very important to create a bridge to hip-hop as it is universal."
The second collaborator is probably more well know on the African continent, Nigeria's most deadly emcee, Mode9.

Naturally Pioneer Unit has been on Twitter for a while now too.
It's basically a web-based service that works like the status update on Facebook, or in their words...
"Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"
We'd like our friends and fans to start following us on Twitter because it's a really cool way for you to keep up to date with what we're doing.
What you'll get:
- Updates about live events
- Tour information
- News from the studio
- Behind the scenes updates
- Album release news
- Links to free MP3s

What you won't get:
- An inbox full of junk promo mail
To help sweeten the deal, we will be giving away Pioneer Unit hampers (signed CDs/ stickers/ badges) to every 100th follower we get on Twitter. Every 1000th follower will get a hamper plus a cash prize of R500*.
To follow Pioneer Unit on Twitter:

Driemanskap have been working around the clock on their debut album, Igqabhukil' Inyongo. I can say without any hype, it's going to take SA by storm - there hasn't been anything this powerful since POC.
We know you're hungry for the album to drop but hold tight fam - soon come! In the mean time, Ma-B and El Nino blessed a killer Hipe production yesterday. Check out eKapa Silapha (Cape Town, We're here)...

Every army needs weapons. Stand back, we've just brought in the heavy artillery!
We are extremely proud and excited to announce the signing of one of the continent's illest producers, Mr. Hiperdelic aka Hipe.
Hipe will be providing production work for all the Unit's artists, as well as developing his own projects which will be released through Pioneer Unit Records.
A true heavyweight, Hipe has produced music for anyone who's anyone in SA Hip Hop. If you don't know, you better ask somebody!
If you needs premium beats for your high-end projects, holla at us and we'll work something out.

We had a great day shooting the video for Welcome to Khaltsha in Khayelitsha yesterday. For those who don't know, 'Khaltsha' is the local slang for 'Khayelitsha'. After a bit of a late start we managed to complete our shot list by 6.30pm, just in time to catch the second half of Arsenal beating Chelsea!
We started the day at the Khayelitsha sign near Lookout Hill before moving to a variety of locations including Lookout Hill itself, Vuyani's meat spot, the Site C taxi rank, the barber's shop in Mandela Park and various spaza shops. We ended up at Solly's Tavern in Mandela Park where Rattex and Kritsi got on stage and broke up the DJ's house set to perform Welcome to Khaltsha. Initially people seemed a bit skeptical as the house beats gave way to Hipe's banging hip hop anthem, but as soon as people heard the first chorus where Rah proudly proclaims, "Khayelitsha made me", everyone went crazy.
Everywhere we went, Rah got nothing but love and good vibes. While we were shooting people constantly jumped in to the shots to dance and hype up the hooks. The enthusiasm and pride people expressed that one of their own sons was making moves was amazing.
With mass media constantly brainwashing us with foreign product, one of our missions at Pioneer Unit is to make South Africans proud of where they come from. We want to do this by creating our own iconography and showing the world how we live down here. We hope we've captured a slice of life in Khayelitsha to show South Africa and the rest of the world.
